cap

There are several types of caps in heraldry. The long cap is a conical cap bearing a tassel of Roman origin at the apex. It is connected with the fillet worn by both priest and sacrificial beast. The long cap was later known as the brewer's cap. The cap of maintenance or the cap of dignity is an ancient symbol of authority and it is placed under the coronets of peers. This cap is also referred to as a chapeau. The doctoral cap indicates a holder of the highest degree of any university faculty. It signifies high academic achievement and a studious, investigative nature.
