caduceus

The caduceus is a very ancient symbol, existing from before 2600 BC. The Mesopotamians considered the intertwining serpents to be a symbol of the god who cured all illness. The caduceus is a symbol of health, both spiritually and physically. It is also the symbol of physicians. A similar symbol is the rod of Aesculapius, a rod entwined by a snake. Aesculapius, the Roman god of healing, is said to have been brought from Greece to Rome, in the form of a snake, during a season of great sickness.
