bit

The symbol of the bit can be attributed to the original bearer's occupation as a master of horses. Two bits are commonly drawn, the manage-bit and the snaffle-bit. The bit is the ensign of the Company of Loriners or bit-makers, arms founded temporarily by King Henry VII but incorporated in 1712.
