The symbol of a bird is thought to have been a symbol of the soul. If the type of bird is not specified in the blazon, it is usually drawn in the form of a blackbird. The black feathers and melodious song make the blackbird a symbol of the darkness of sin and the alluring temptations of the flesh. It may be borne as a reminder to resist temptation.
