Symbolism > billet

billet

The billet represents a letter folded for transmission. It has the form of a plain rectangle and it occurs more frequently when a field or a superior charge is described as billetté or semé, which means that there are many small billets distributed over it, alternating in the pattern of bricks. It may indicate that the man granted a coat of arms with this charge was a man whose words and deeds were deemed trustworthy. It has also been suggested that lawyers and men of letters often adopted the sign of the billet. The best-known instance where this charge was used was in the shield borne over the arms of England during the joint reign of William and Mary.
