baton

The baton is a symbol of authority. In heraldry, it also often denotes illegitimacy. Descendants of royalty would display gold or silver batons, while others carried colored ones. Marks of illegitimacy in armory are by no means dishonourable, though. They are merely a tradition carried over from the days when it was necessary to distinguish rightful heirs from the others who might have a claim to the family title and fortune.
