bat

The bat may was an intimidating heraldic symbol used to inspire fear in enemies. It is usually represented displayed, with wings open and facing the observer. It is sometimes blazoned by the old name rere-mouse. Quoted from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream, “Some war with rere-mice for their leathern wings.”
