Where did the English Young family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Young family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

Young is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin. It was a name given to a person who was very young, from the Old English word yong and yung and was first bestowed on the younger of two bearers of the same personal name, usually a son who was named for his father.

Before the last few hundred years, the English language had no fast system of spelling rules. For that reason, spelling variations are commonly found in early Anglo-Saxon surnames. Over the years, many variations of the name Young were recorded, including Young, Younge, Yonge, Youngson and others.

First found in Somerset, where the Young family held a seat from ancient times. After the conquest of England, the Anglo-Saxon culture was suppressed as Norman elements were rapidly introduced into the country. Norman naming practices were adopted and French became the language of the courts. However, many Anglo-Saxon surnames managed to survive the Norman influx, and the Young family could be found in England before and after the Norman Conquest.

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Although many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, those who did see the shores of North America perceived great opportunities before them. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Young family emigrate to North America: Richard Young and his wife, who settled in Virginia in 1623; as did Edward and Jane Young in 1636; Joseph and Margaret Young, who immigrated to New England with their two sons in 1635.
