A Boernician family in ancient Scotland were the ancestors of those who first used the name Woodburne. They lived in any of a number of places of the same name in Ayrshire, Kincardine, and Midlothian. The place-name Woodburne comes from the Old English words, wudu and burna, which mean wood and stream. The place-name referred to a stream which ran through the woods. The original bearer of the surname Woodburne would have lived near such a stream.

Spelling variations occur frequently in Scottish names that date from the medieval era. They result from a general lack of grammatical rules and the tendency to spell names according to sound. Woodburne has been spelled Woodburn, Woodburne, Woodbine, Woodbourne, Whiteburn and many more.
