Where did the English Winnett family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Winnett family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The present generation of the Winnett family is only the most recent to bear a name that dates back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. Their name comes from having lived at Winthrop in the county of Lincolnshire. That place-name is derived from the Old English personal name Winn, meaning friend and porp, meaning settlement, and indicates that it was once owned by someone name Winn.

Until the dictionary, an invention of only the last few hundred years, the English language lacked any comprehensive system of spelling rules. Consequently, spelling variations in names are frequently found in early Anglo-Saxon and later Anglo-Norman documents. One person's name was often spelled several different ways over a lifetime. The recorded variations of Winnett include Winthorpe, Wynethorpe, Wynthorpe, Winethorpe, Wynethrop, Winthrop, Winthropp, Winethrop, Winthorp, Winthropp, Wynthropp, Wynethropp, Wynthrop, Winthrip, Winthrup, Withrupp, Withripp, Winthroppe, Wynthroppe and many more.

First found in Lincolnshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor, some say at the time of the Norman Conquest of England in the year 1066 A.D.

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Winnett were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: Robert, Deane, John and Elizabeth Winthrop who settled in Boston Massachusetts in 1635 and they were related to the Governor or one of his brothers; William Winthrip settled in Virginia in 1663.

Motto Translated: An anagram of John Winthrop.
