First found in Suffolk, where the Seaman family was anciently seated as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066; the language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. However, many Saxon surnames survived, and the family name Seaman was first referenced in the year 1169 when John Semanni was found with estates in Suffolk.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: John Seaman, who came to Connecticut in 1640; Ed Seaman, who settled in Virginia in 1669; George Seaman, who immigrated to Barbados in 1685; Benjamin Seaman, who was naturalized in New York in 1776.
