Where did the English Rook family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Rook family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Rook comes from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It was a name for a person who because of their physical characteristics was known as a rook. A broad and miscellaneous class of surnames, nickname surnames referred to a characteristic of the first person who used the name. They can describe the bearer's favored style of clothing, appearance, habits, or character. In this case the surname refers to those individuals who have black hair or dark complexions.

Only recently has spelling become standardized in the English language. As the English language evolved in the Middle Ages, the spelling of names changed also. The name Rook has undergone many spelling variations, including Rook, Rooke, Rookes, Rooks, Roke and others.

First found in Yorkshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Rook were among those contributors: Daniel Rooke settled in Virginia in 1652; Sam UEL Rooke settled in Virginia in 1654; Samuel Rooke settled in Boston in 1712; Thomas Rooke settled in Virginia in 1650.

Motto Translated: Rooks will flourish while the sun shines.
