Where did the English Ripley family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Ripley family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancestry of the name Ripley dates from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It comes from when the family lived in the village of Ripley found in various locations in England including Yorkshire. The surname was originally derived from the Old English words ripel meaning strip of land and leah meaning wood. Thus the original bearers of the surname lived in the area that was defined by a strip of land by the forest.

Spelling variations in names were a common occurrence before English spelling was standardized a few hundred years ago. In the Middle Ages, even the literate spelled their names differently as the English language incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other European languages. Many variations of the name Ripley have been found, including Ripley, Rippley, Rippley, Rippleigh, Ripleigh, Riplea and many more.

First found in Yorkshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become for new powerful nations. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Ripley, or a variant listed above: William, Mary, Sarah and John Ripley who settled in Boston Massachusetts in 1638; William Ripley settled in Hingham Massachusetts in 1630; William Ripley settled in Carolina in 1774.
