Where did the English Pula family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Pula family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The history of the name Pula goes back those Anglo-Saxon tribes that once ruled over Britain. Such a name was given to a young buck; it is derived from the Old French word poulain, which meant colt. This nickname would have been given to a person given over to friskiness and possessed of a certain nervous energy in much the same way a young horse is. A broad and miscellaneous class of surnames, nickname surnames referred to a characteristic of the first person who used the name. They can describe the bearer's favored style of clothing, appearance, habits, or character. Often nicknames described strong traits or attributes that people wished to emulate in a specific animal. In the pre-Christian era, many pagan gods and demigods were believed to be a mixture of animals and humans, such as the Greek god Pan who was the god of flocks and herds and was represented as a man with the legs, horns and ears of a goat. In the Middle Ages, anthropomorphic ideas, which attributed human qualities and form to gods or animals, were held about the characters of other living creatures. They were based on the creature's habits. Moreover, these associations were reflected in folk-tales, mythology, and legends which portrayed animals behaving as humans.

Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Pula family name include Pulleine, Pullen, Pullan, Pulleyn, Pulling and many more.

First found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

For political, religious, and economic reasons, thousands of English families boarded ships for Ireland, the Canadas, the America colonies, and many of smaller tropical colonies in the hope of finding better lives abroad. Although the passage on the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving, those families that survived the trip often went on to make valuable contributions to those new societies to which they arrived. Investigation of the Origins of family names on the North American continent has revealed that early immigrants bearing the name Pula or a variant listed above: John Pullein who settled in Virginia in 1764; William Pullen settled in Barbados in 1663; Preston Pullen settled in Boston in 1766; John, Joseph, Robert, Thomas Pullen all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1870..
