First found in Kent; however early records of the name are scarce. Although they are probably not related, it is interesting to note that there is a record of a John Pridel in 1320 in the "Petre Documents."

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Abraham Preble, who came from Kent, England to the Scituate Colony in Plymouth; he is on record in Massachusetts in 1637; and an account of his descendants: "The Genealogical Sketch of the Fiirst Three Generations of Prebles in America" was written by George Henry Preble, published in 1868and is in the Library of Congress, (CS71.P922). Other settlers included: Henry Preble, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1800.
