Conjecturally they are descended from Gilbert of Panton, a Norman noble who held the village from the Archbishop of York at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086 A.D. The village consisted of a Church and a few houses.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Mrs. Panton who settled in the Barbados with her servants in 1680; David Panton settled in Philadelphia Pa. in 1775; Richard Panting settled in Philadelphia Pa.
