On the Scottish west coast, the O'Donell family was born among the ancient Dalriadan clans. Their name comes from the personal name Donald. the surname is derived from the Gaelic Mac Dhomhnuill, which means son of Donald; it is a form of the surname MacDonald.

In various documents O'Donell has been spelled Since medieval scribes still spelled according to sound, records from that era contain an enormous number of spelling variations. MacDonnell, MacDonnel, McDonnell, MacDonell and others.

First found in Inverness, where they were seated from early times.
