Where did the English Newman family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Newman family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancient Anglo-Saxon culture once found in Britain is the soil from which the many generations of the Newman family have grown. The name Newman was given to a member of the family who was a stranger or newcomer. The surname Newman is derived from the Old English words neowe, niwe, and nige, which all mean new, and the word mann, which means man.

Spelling variations in names were a common occurrence before English spelling was standardized a few hundred years ago. In the Middle Ages, even the literate spelled their names differently as the English language incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other European languages. Many variations of the name Newman have been found, including Newman, Newmen, Newmin and others.

First found in Dorsetshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become powerful new nations. Among early immigrants of the Newman surname to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were: Alice Newman settled in Virginia in 1638; George Newman settled in Maine in 1630; Joe Newman settled in Virginia in 1635; along with John, Mountford, Richard, Thomas, and Robert.

Motto Translated: Where there is love there is faith.
