Where did the English Meadows family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Meadows family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

Meadows is a name of ancient Anglo-Saxon origin and comes from the family once having lived in or near a meadow. The surname Meadows is derived from the Old English words męd and mędwe, which both mean meadow. The surname Meadows belongs to the class of topographic surnames, which were given to people who resided near physical features such as hills, streams, churches, or types of trees.

Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Meadows family name include Meadowes, Meadows, Meadow, Meddows, Meddus, Meadus, Medus, Medis and many more.

First found in Suffolk where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

For political, religious, and economic reasons, thousands of English families boarded ships for Ireland, the Canadas, the America colonies, and many of smaller tropical colonies in the hope of finding better lives abroad. Although the passage on the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving, those families that survived the trip often went on to make valuable contributions to those new societies to which they arrived. Early immigrants bearing the Meadows surname or a spelling variation of the name include : Anne Meadowes settled with her husband in Virginia in 1684; Elizabeth Meadows and her husband settled in Annapolis in 1758; James and John Meadows settled in Philadelphia in 1860. Edmund Meadus of Poole, Dorset, settled in Newfoundland in the 1830's..
