Where did the Irish Manahan family come from? What is the Irish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Manahan family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The original Gaelic form of the Irish name Manahan was written as O Mainchin, which is derived from the word manach, which means monk.

Names written in official documents were generally spelt as they sounded, leading to the problem of one name being recorded under several different variations, creating the illusion in records of more than one person. Among the many spelling variations of the surname Manahan that are preserved in documents of the family history are Mannix, Managan, Managhan, Manahan, Manihan, O'Managhan, O'Manihan, Mangan and many more.

First found in county Cork.

In the late 18th century, Irish Families began emigrating to North America in the search of a plot of land to call their own. This pattern of emigration grew steadily until the 1840s when the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s cause thousands of Irish to flee the death and disease that accompanied the disaster. Those that made it alive to the shores of the United States and British North America (later to become Canada) were, however, instrumental in the development of those two powerful nations. Many of these Irish immigrants proudly bore the name of Manahan: Jane Managan settled in Maryland in 1775; Betty Managhan settled in New York in 1850;Daniel Managhan settled in Philadelphia in 1842; Antony Manahan settled in Quebec in 1849.
