First found in County Limerick, and in the ancient territory of Oriel, the two places in which two separate septs of the same name existed. The chiefs of the O Luain sept of Limerick were lords of Deisbeg, but were dispersed throughout Munster after the Anglo-Norman invasion. The O Luain sept of Oriel in the north were scattered as well.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Beckee, Elizabeth, and Betty Lamb, who settled in Boston in 1736; John Lamb, who landed in New York in 1811; Lawrence O'Loane, who emigrated from Ulster to Quebec in 1816.
