Where did the English Loftus family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Loftus family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The surname Loftus evolved from several place names used by England's ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. For example, there was a village of Loftus and Lofthouse, both in Yorkshire. This place-name was originally derived from the Old Norse words "lopt" meaning loft and "hus" meaning "house. "

The first dictionaries that appeared in the last few hundred years did much to standardize the English language. Before that time, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Loftus has been spelled many different ways, including Loftus, Lofthouse, Loftis, Loftiss, Loftos and others.

First found in Yorkshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Loftuss to arrive in North America: John Loftis settled in the Barbados in 1634; John Lofthouse arrived in Philadelphia in 1878; John Loftus arrived in Philadelphia in 1682; Biddy and Elen Loftus arrived in Quebec in 1848.
