Where did the Scottish Lackey family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Lackey family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada is thought to be the home of the ancestors of the Lackey family. Their name comes from someone having lived at Leckie in the county of Stirlingshire. The place name is derived from the Gaelic leac, or "flagstone," and the suffix -ach, which means "place."

In the Middle Ages, the translation between Gaelic and English was not a highly developed process. Spelling was not yet standardized, and so, an enormous number of spelling variations appear in records of early Scottish names. Lackey has appeared as Leckie, Leck, Leckey, Lecky, Lackey, Lackie, Lachey, Lakey and many more.

First found in Stirlingshire, where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Dalriadan families proliferated in North America. Their descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through clan societies and highland games. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Lackey or a variant listed above: Catherine Leckie, who settled with her husband in Virginia in 1685; Jane Lackey settled in Maryland in 1699; Andrew Leckie, who came to New York in 1775.
