First found in Bourgundy where the family has been a prominent family for centuries, and were seated with lands and manor. The family were well established in the region of Dijonnais and several members of the family distinguished themselves through their contributions toward the community in which they lived and were rewarded with lands, titles and letters patent confirming their nobility.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Francois Labranche, who arrived in Canada in 1636, aboard the ship, Saint-Jehan;" René Branche, who came to Quebec in 1661; Marie Varin Branche, who settled in Quebec in 1681.
