Jerome is one of the many new names that came to England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name Jerome comes from the Old French given name Jerome, which itself was originally derived from the Greek name Hieronymos. The Greek name was composed of the elements hieros, which means sacred, and onyma, which means name. 1

Early Origins of the Jerome family

The surname Jerome was first found in Berkshire where the first record of the Jerome family was as an early spelling as a forename, German Curzun who was listed there in 1206. The Curia Regis Rolls also included Jeronimus, Geronimus, Gerarmus de Curzun in Berkshire and Staffordshire (1206-1211.) A few years later, Jerom' de Ponte Burgi was found in the Assize Rolls for Yorkshire in 1219 and later again, Jeronimus de Normaneby was listed in the Pipe Rolls for Lincolnshire in 1230. 2

Because of this political and religious unrest within English society, many people decided to immigrate to the colonies. Families left for Ireland, North America, and Australia in enormous numbers, traveling at high cost in extremely inhospitable conditions. The New World in particular was a desirable destination, but the long voyage caused many to arrive sick and starving. Those who made it, though, were welcomed by opportunities far greater than they had known at home in England.
