Where did the English Horack family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Horack family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Horack is from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of the Britain and comes from the Old Danish and Old Swedish name Erik and the Old Norse name Eiríkr. Many Scandinavian personal names were left in the British Isles as a legacy of the Viking raids which plagued the coastal regions of Britain from the 8th to 10th centuries, and many of these eventually became Anglo-Saxon surnames.

The first dictionaries that appeared in the last few hundred years did much to standardize the English language. Before that time, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Horack has been spelled many different ways, including Herrick, Herricke and others.

First found in Leicestershire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Horacks to arrive in North America: Jacob Herrick settled in New York in 1646; Henry Herrick settled in Salem, Massachusetts in 1630; Thomas Herrick settled in Virginia in 1636.
