First found in Lancashire where they held a family seat in the vicinity of what is now Liverpool. Although many historians believe the name to mean a relationship to a brother in law, we think this to be too convenient, over simplified. It is most likely to be an interpretation of Highmore, a Cumberland family of Armathwaite, a branch of which moved south to Liverpool in early times before the area was even known as Liverpool.

A great wave of immigration to the New World was the result of the enormous political and religious disarray that struck England at that time. Families left for the New World in extremely large numbers. The long journey was the end of many immigrants and many more arrived sick and starving. Still, those who made it were rewarded with an opportunity far greater than they had known at home in England. These emigrant families went on to make significant contributions to these emerging colonies in which they settled. Some of the first North American settlers carried this name or one of its variants: Felix Hitchman, who settled in New York in 1823; Conrad Hitchman, who arrived in New York in 1832; Sarah Ann Hickmott, who came to Montreal in 1849; Hannah Hickmott, who arrived in Montreal in 1849.
