Where did the English Hiser family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Hiser family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The Hiser name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the village and township of Hessay, which is in the parish of Moor Monkton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The surname Hiser belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

Only recently has spelling become standardized in the English language. As the English language evolved in the Middle Ages, the spelling of names changed also. The name Hiser has undergone many spelling variations, including Hessey, Hessy, Hessay, Hesee, Hesey and others.

First found in Yorkshire, where evidence suggests they held a family seat before the Norman Conquest in 1066.

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Hiser were among those contributors: Daniel Hessey, who sailed to Philadelphia, Pa. in 1840.
