In the Scottish/English Borderlands, the Strathclyde Britons were the first to use the name Hana. It is derived from the personal names Hannah and Anna. Hana is therefore a metronymic surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Metronyms could be derived from the personal name of the mother of the bearer, or from religious and secular heroines. The surname Hana may also be of local origin, since there was a written reference to John of Hanna, who was the master of a ship belonging to the King of Scotland in 1424, however, there is no known place called Hanna in Scotland. The more likely derivation of the name is the metronymic.

Scribes in Medieval Scotland spelled names by sound rather than any set of rules, so an enormous number of spelling variations exist in names of that era. Hana has been spelled Hannah, Hanna, Hannay, Hanney and others.

First found in Wigtownshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Among them: Alexander Hannah settled in Boston in 1766; Andrew Hannah settled in Antigua in 1679; George Hannah settled in Barbados in 1680 with his wife and two children.
