Where did the German Grothaus family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Grothaus family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The Grothaus surname comes from the Low German words "grot(h)," meaning "large," or "great," and "haus," meaning "house;" thus the name may have been topographic, for someone who lived in or by a large house or farmstead,

Spelling variations of this family name include: Groethausen, Groithausen, Grothusen, Grothaus, Gothuss and many more.

First found in East Prussia, where the name came from humble beginnings but gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. It later became more prominent as numerous branches of the same house acquired distant estates, some of which were located in other countries. They were originally seated in Courland and Livonia in the 13th century.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Herman Groethausen, who came to American in 1710, where he lived at Springfield Manor, Germantown, PA; Friedrich Wilh. Von Grothausen, one of the Hessian troops on record in America in 1767.
