Where did the German Fur family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Fur family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Fur derives from the German word "feuer" meaning "fire," and was probably an occupational name for someone who worked with fire such as a smith, a fire lighter, or a person who took care of the heating a household.

One can encounter great variation in the spelling of surnames: in early times, spelling in general, and thus the spelling of names was not yet standardized; and later, spellings would change with branching and movement of families.Variations of the name Fur include Feuer, Feuerer, Feirer, Feierle, Feuerre, Fuer, Fewer, Fuere and many more.

First found in Austria, where the family gained a significant reputation for its contributions to the emerging mediaeval society. The name became prominent as many branches of the family founded separate houses and acquired estates in various regions, always elevating their social status by their great contributions to society. Individual bearers of the name first mentioned in ancient chronicles include Pertholt der Feurer in the Sonnenberg monastery around 1350.
