Places named Frías can be found in two provinces in Spain, in Burgos (Castilla la Viaja) and in Cadiz (Andalucia). The word "frias" is derived from the Latin "frigiditas" which in Spanish became "frialdades" shortened to "frías" meaning "cold." This was a reference to the climate of the area which in ancient times was cold.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Martin De Frías who traveled to Florida in 1538; Diego De Frías who sailed to the Spanish Main in 1565; Francisco De Frías who arrived in New Granada in 1574 with his wife, Ines de Valencia, and two children, Francisco and Maria, Catalina de Frias who settled in Mexico in 1594. Later settlers included Vicente Frías, a Spanish soldier who voyaged to New Orleans in 1837 at the age of 18.
