Where did the English Dunton family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Dunton family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Dunton is of Anglo-Saxon origin and came from when the family lived in Dunton in Essex, a place which no longer exists. Despite the fact that it no longer exists on any map, and its location is unknown, its existence in the Middle Ages is beyond doubt. It was recorded as a place in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it was rendered Dantune. Variations in spelling were common with all names until around the 18th century. Often the people who had the name were themselves completely illiterate, and were simply telling a clerk of the King's Court what their name was. This meant that the spelling of a name was up to the whim of the clerk. Often the names were Latinized (that is, put into a Latin form), or, it the clerk had never heard of the name before, he would make up the spelling of it on the spot, based upon phonetics. However, phonetics was an imprecise science at the time, leading to many and varied spellings of the same name. This practice ended in the 18th century, when the spread of literacy meant that most people knew how to spell their names. Quite often, the modern spelling of a surname is a phonetic rendering of the name as said in the 18th century.

It is only in the last few hundred years that the English language has been standardized. For that reason, early Anglo-Saxon surnames like Dunton are characterized by many spelling variations. As the English language changed and incorporated elements of other European languages, even literate people changed the spelling of their names. Scribes and monks in the Middle Ages spelled names they sounded, so it is common to find several variations that refer to a single person. The variations of the name Dunton include: Dunton, Duntin and others.

First found in Norfolk where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Many English families tired of political and religious strife left Britain for the new colonies in North America. Although the trip itself offered no relief - conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and many travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute - these immigrants believed the oppurtunities that awaited them were worth the risks. Once in the colonies, many of the families did indeed prosper and, in turn, made significant contributions to the culture and economies of the growing colonies. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families has revealed a number of immigrants bearing the name Dunton or a variant listed above: Andrew Dunton, who settled in Virginia in 1634; Thomas settled in Virginia in 1647; Robert settled in Pennsylvania in 1682; Robert Dunton arrived in Boston Massachusetts in 1822..
