Origin Displayed: German

Where did the German Dotzel family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Dotzel family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The roots of the distinguished surname Dotzel lie in the former dutchy of Swabia. The name is of two possible origins; firstly, it may be derived from a High German word meaning "small, feeble person." In this case, the name would have initially been bestowed on the progenitor as a nickname. Alternatively, the name may be derived from "Dotzlar," the name of a town in Siegen; in this instance, the original bearer of the name would have been a native of this town.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Dotzler, Dotz, Totz, Tötz, Tötzlin, Dotzlar and many more.

First found in Swabia, where it is thought to have originated. During the Middle Ages, it was common for a new resident of a city to be referred to by the name of his hometown; thus, it is likely that one of the original bearers was a native of the town of Dotzlar who had moved to Swabia. The earliest known bearer of the name was Tötzlin, who lived in this region in 1337. The young Dotzel family played an important role in the history of the region, and was instrumental in the development of medieval Swabian society.
