Where did the Scottish Donachie family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Donachie family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The story of the Donachie family is rich with Scottish history. It begins in the ancient kingdom of Dalriada where Donachie evolved as a name for some who lived on the lands of Stewart of Atholl. Anciently, they were known as Clan Donnachaidh, coming from the Gaelic name Donnachadh Reamhar, or Duncan the Stout, one of the Celtic Earls of Atholl. Most of the Clan took on the name Robertson, which comes from the personal name of 15th century Clan chief Robert Riach.

Historical recordings of the name Donachie include many spelling variations. They include They are the result of repeated translations of the name from Gaelic to English and inconsistencies in spelling rules. Robertson, Conachie, Conaghy, Conacher, Conaghy, Conchie, Donnachie, Donachie and many more.

First found in Perthshire, where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Scotland to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Scottish settlers arrived in many of the communities that became the backbones of the United States and Canada. Many stayed, but some headed west for the endless open country of the prairies. In the American War of Independence, many Scots who remained loyal to England re-settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists. Scots across North America were able to recover much of their lost heritage in the 20th century as clan societies and highland games sprang up across North America. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Donachies to arrive on North American shores: John Conacher, who settled in Maryland in 1716; C. Conacher, who settled in Philadelphia in 1838; Margaret Connacher, who came to New Brunswick in 1799.
