The ancestors of the Dixon family were part of an ancient Scottish tribe called the Picts. They derived the name Dixon from son of Dick which is a derivative of the personal name Richard.

In medieval Scotland, names were more often spelled according to sound than any regular set of rules. An enormous number of spelling variations were the result. Over the years, the name Dixon has been spelled Dixon, Dickson, Dixoun, Dikson, Dyxson, Dyckson, Dicksoun, Dicson and many more.

First found in Kirkcudbrightshire where they held a family seat from early times.

Immigration and passenger lists have shown many early immigrants bearing the old Scottish name of Dixon: Joan Dickson who settled in Pennsylvania in 1682; Stephen Dickson settled in Virginia in 1619; one year before the "Mayflower"; William Dickson settled in Maryland in 1719.
