Where did the Scottish Danahy family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Danahy family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

In ancient Scotland, the ancestors of the Danahy family were part of a tribe called the Pict. The name Danahy is derived from the personal name Dennis. Danahy is a patronymic surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Some patronyms were formed from the personal names of the father of the bearer, while others came from prominent religious and secular figures. The surname Danahy was first established in Lancashire, prior to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

The appearance of the printing press and the first dictionaries in the last few hundred years did much to standardize spelling. Prior to that time scribes spelled according to sound, a practice that resulted in many spelling variations. Danahy has been spelled Denny, Denney, Dennie, Denie, Denye, Deanney, Deannie and many more.

First found in Lancashire, where they held a family seat from ancient times.

The expense of the crossing to the North American colonies seemed small beside the difficulties of remaining in Scotland. It was a long and hard trip, but at its end lay the reward of freedom. Some Scots remained faithful to England and called themselves United Empire Loyalists, while others fought in the American War of Independence. Much of this lost Scottish heritage has been recovered in the last century through clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations. A search of immigration and passenger lists revealed many important, early immigrants to North America bearing the name of Danahy: Thomas Denny from Combs, Devon, England settled in Leicester, Massachusetts in 1646; Mary Denny settled in New England (Massachusetts) in 1635; another Mary Denny settled in Maryland in 1736.
