Where did the German Dal family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Dal family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The German state of Bavaria is the ancestral home of the Dal family. Dal is a local name. Dal is a name for someone who lived in an ancient village on the edge of a swamp. The surname Dolle is derived from the Indo-Germanic word dul, which was used to describe dirty or swampy water. The surname can also be traced to the town of Dollendorf, which is also composed of the element dorf which refers to a settlement. Thus, a town or village called Dollendorf would be located near a moor or swampland. Furthermore, the name Dolle is of nickname origin and refers to a person who was noted in the community for his strength and prowess. The name can be traced to the Old Germanic word tol, which means strong and efficient and to be named Tol was an honor.

Many cultural groups lived in the German states in medieval times. Each had its own dialect and traditions, and unique variations of popular names. Low German, which is similar to contemporary Dutch, was spoken in Westphalia. German names are characterized by additions such as regional suffixes and phrases that tell something about the origin or background of its original bearer. Further contributing to the variation in German names was the fact that there were no spelling rules in medieval times: scribes recorded names according to their sound. The recorded spelling variations of Dal include Dolle, Doll, Daal, Dol, Dole, Doal, Dolls, Dal, Dolz, Dohl and many more.

First found in Bavaria, where the name Dolle emerged in medieval times as one of the notable families of the region. During the 13th century the surname was identified with some of the region's great social and economic advancements which contributed to later developments towards nationhood.

European migration to North America began in the mid-17th century and continued unabated until the mid-20th. Many Bavarians made the long trip to escape poverty or persecution based on their religious beliefs. The chance for tenant farmers to own their own land was also a major drawing card. They settled all across the United States in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many came to Canada also, settling in Ontario and the prairie provinces. Analysis of immigration records has shown some of the first Dals to arrive in North America, and among them were: Peter Dole, age 20; who settled in Virginia in 1635. Richard Dole arrived in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1640; Di Dol, settled in Virginia in 1699; Hans Adam Doll settled in New York in 1709.
