Where did the English Cager family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Cager family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Cager is rooted in the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. It was originally a name for someone who worked as a jailer, or prison guard; people who had been prisoners. The word cage means prison, and denoted one who either worked there or was incarcerated there. If applied to a jailer, the name is occupational in nature meaning worker at the prison. If applied to a former inmate, it is a nickname.

It is only in the last few hundred years that the English language has been standardized. For that reason, early Anglo-Saxon surnames like Cager are characterized by many spelling variations. As the English language changed and incorporated elements of other European languages, even literate people changed the spelling of their names. The variations of the name Cager include Cage, Cadger, Cadge and others.

First found in Cambridgeshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Many English families tired of political and religious strife left Britain for the new colonies in North America. Although the trip itself offered no relief - conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and many travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute - these immigrants believed the oppurtunities that awaited them were worth the risks. Once in the colonies, many of the families did indeed prosper and, in turn, made significant contributions to the culture and economies of the growing colonies. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families has revealed a number of immigrants bearing the name Cager or a variant listed above: L. Cage who arrived in New Orleans in 1822; Robert Cadger settled in Maryland in 1676; Edward Cadge settled in Virginia in 1620. This same Edward Cadge maybe the ancestor of the notable John Cage of Virginia..
