Where did the English Bur family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Bur family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Bur is of Anglo-Saxon origin. It was name for a determined person. The surname Bur is derived from the Old English word burre, which first appeared c. 1330 and has taken the spellings of bur and burr in modern English. Shakespeare used the word to describe a person who "clings like a burr" and is "difficult to shake off," but this sense of the word is probably much older.

Spelling variations in names were a common occurrence before English spelling was standardized a few hundred years ago. In the Middle Ages, even the literate spelled their names differently as the English language incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other European languages. Many variations of the name Bur have been found, including Burr, Bur, Burre and others.

First found in Lincolnshire where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Families began migrating abroad in enormous numbers because of the political and religious discontent in England. Often faced with persecution and starvation in England, the possibilities of the New World attracted many English people. Although the ocean trips took many lives, those who did get to North America were instrumental in building the necessary groundwork for what would become powerful new nations. Among early immigrants of the Bur surname to cross the Atlantic and come to North America were: Edward Burr who settled in Virginia in 1635; Jeremy Burr settled in Virginia in 1635; also Mathew, Robert, and Edward, brothers settled at the same time.
