Origin Displayed: Scottish

Where did the Scottish Betton family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Betton family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The western coast of Scotland and the desolate Hebrides islands are the ancient home of the Betton family. Their name is derived from the names of Macbeth and Bethune, or Beaton. The Macbeth and Bethune families, who were hereditary physicians to the Chiefs of Macdonald, practiced medicine on the Isles during the Middle Ages and their names merged in English into the one surname of Beaton. The Macbeths were concentrated in Islay and Mull, whereas the Beatons were concentrated in Skye. However, the Beaton family was not restricted to the Isles and it later branched to other counties such as Fraser. Nonetheless, by the 17th century, the Beaton family "ceased to practice the healing art" and the last of the hereditary physicians was Niel Beaton who practiced medicine in about 1763.

Many spelling variations of Betton have been recorded over the years, including These are the result of the medieval practice of spelling according to sound and repeated translation between Gaelic and English. Beaton, Beeton, MacBeth, MacBeaton, McBee, MacBee and others.

First found in the island of Islay, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066.

Many who arrived from Scotland settled along the east coast of North America in communities that would go on to become the backbones of the young nations of the United States and Canada. In the American War of Independence, many settlers who remained loyal to England went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. Their descendants later began to recover the lost Scottish heritage through events such as the highland games that dot North America in the summer months. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Betton family emigrate to North America: Richard Beaton who settled in Nevis in 1654; Thomas Beaton settled in Virginia in 1630; William Beaton settled in the Barbados in 1635; Margaret Beeton settled in New England in 1773.
