Where did the English Bam family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Bam family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The name Bam was first used by England's ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. It comes from when the family lived in the village and parish of Binns near Great Smeaton in Yorkshire. In medieval times, the name literally meant "hollows," and indicated that the bearer lived near a hollow.

Bam has been spelled many different ways, including Before English spelling became standardized over the last few hundred years, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. As the English language changed in the Middle Ages, absorbing pieces of Latin and French, as well as other languages, the spelling of people's names also changed considerably, even over a single lifetime. Binns, Bins, Binnes, Binn and others.

First found in Yorkshire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Bams to arrive on North American shores: Mary Binns who settled in New England in 1775; Charles Binns in Philadelphia in 1857; Benjamin Pemberton Binns in Philadelphia in 1817; John Bins settled in Philadelphia in 1854.
