First found in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, where they held a family seat from very early times. Ailet appears as the personal name of a landholder recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Aylotts to arrive in North America: Jonadab Illet, who sailed to Virginia in 1623; and William Aylott (also spelled Aylett) to America in 1774.
