Where did the Scottish Arra family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Arra family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The Arra family comes from the ancient Scottish Dalriadan clans of the mountainous west coast of Scotland. The name Arra is derived from the name Macara, which is the Gaelic word for son of the young, manly one.

Spelling variations were extremely common in medieval names, since scribes from that era recorded names according to sound rather than a standard set of rules. Arra has appeared in various documents spelled McAree, MacAree, McAra, MacAra, McArra, MacArra, McCarra, MacCarra, McCarry, MacCarry, McCarrie and many more.

First found in Perthshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Dalriadan families proliferated in North America. Their descendants still populate many communities in the eastern parts of both the United States and Canada. Some settled in Canada as United Empire Loyalists, in the wake of the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border have recovered much of their heritage in the 20th century through clan societies and highland games. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Arra or a variant listed above: three people by the name of John McAree who arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1855; 1861 and 1869; Owen arrived in 1870. James and John MacCarry settled in New England in 1805..
