Where did the English Adkins family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Adkins family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

Adkins is an ancient name whose history on English soil dates back to the wave of emigration that followed the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The name comes from the personal name Adam. Adkins is a diminutive which means son of Adam.

The first dictionaries that appeared in the last few hundred years did much to standardize the English language. Before that time, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Adkins has been spelled many different ways, including Adkin, Atkin, Atkins, Adekin, Adekyns, Adekyn and many more.

First found in Westmorland and Northumberland where they held a family seat from ancient times, before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Adkinss to arrive in North America: Sir Jonathon Atkins who was Governor of Barbados in 1663; Henry Atkins settled in Plymouth in 1641; Thomas Adkins settled in East Hartford in 1682.

Motto Translated: He shall repress violence with laws.
