First found in Dorset where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects. There are also early records of Stangrim Noueman listed in the Pipe Rolls of Norfolk in 1166; and a Godwin Nieweman listed in the Pipe Rolls of Oxfordshire in 1169.
