First found in Austria where the name became noted for its many branches in the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In their later history the name became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Ernestine Natz and Ferdinand Natz, who both came to New York from Bremen in 1867; Caroline Natz and Christian Natz, who arrived in New York in 1868; Stephan Nagy, who applied for naturalization in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1889.
