First found in Leicestershire, before the name had made its way to Ireland; their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

An examination of immigration and passenger lists revealed many bearing the name Moore: Miles Moor, who settled in South Carolina in 1716; James Mooers, and his wife Isabel, who came to New Hampshire in 1725; Aaron Moore, who immigrated to Virginia in 1744.
