First found in Sussex, where they had been granted lands by King William after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

Many English families emigrated to North American colonies in order to escape the political chaos in Britain at this time. Overcrowding on the ships caused the majority of the immigrants to arrive diseased, famished, and destitute from the long journey across the stormy Atlantic. Early North American immigration records have revealed a number of people bearing the name Boone or a variant listed above: Lawrence Bohun, who arrived in Virginia in 1610; Ann Bone, who settled in Virginia in 1663; William Bone settled in Virginia in 1643; John Bone settled in Maryland in 1747.
