Where did the Scottish Bennett family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Bennett family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The Strathclyde clans of the Scottish/English Borderlands were the first people to use the name Bennett. It is derived from the ancient Latin given name Benedictus, which means blessed.

It is only in the last few hundred years that rules have developed and the process of spelling according to sound has been abandoned. Scottish names from before that time tend to appear under many different spelling variations. Bennett has been spelled Bennett, Bennet, Benett, Benet and others.

First found in Lancashire, where they held a family seat from ancient times.

Unwelcome in their beloved homeland, many Scots sailed for the colonies of North America. There, they found land and freedom, and even the opportunity to make a new nation in the American War of Independence. These Scottish settlers played essential roles in the founding of the United States, and the shaping of contemporary North America. Among them: Sam UEL Bennett who settled in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635; Richard Bennett in Salem, Mass, 1636; David Bennett of Rowley, Massachusetts a Physician, and many more. In Newfoundland, William Bennet settled in St. John's in 1675.
